Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize

Learn About Our Council

The Nurses and Midwives Council of Belize (NMCB) was established through the Nurses and Midwives Act (1963) to protect the public through the regulation of nursing and midwifery practice in Belize.

Under this Act, the NMCB has the responsibility to:

Set standards for nursing and midwifery education
Conduct examinations for nurses
Register duly qualified nurses and Midwives
Keep a Register of nurses and midwives
Take disciplinary action when required in cases of convictions or misconduct

In its effort to protect the public, the NMCB reviews the educational qualifications of all nurses who apply to work in Belize and determines their eligibility to take the appropriate licensure exam. The NMCB registers successful examination candidates and issues licenses which must be renewed every two years. To be approved for re-licensure each nurse and midwife must be fit to practice in the profession and must have participated in continuing education courses that ensure that their knowledge and skills are current and relevant.

The NMCB is made up of 13 members who represent the nursing practice and education sectors. Two members of the public and four members of the Nursing Association of Belize also serve on the Council which meets quarterly. The registrar and a secretary carry out the day-to-day functions of the Council.
